Vote Yes on H.R. 146
Thank you very much for voting yes on S. 22 the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act of 2009 on March 11. I strongly urge you to continue to support this package by voting yes on H.R. 146 when the omnibus package returns to the House floor in the coming days. This package includes over 160 bills that have bipartisan Congressional support and robust local support from a diverse array of stakeholders. The measures in the bill will benefit local economies by providing new opportunities for tourism and recreation as well as desirable places for people to live and work.
This omnibus bill would safeguard over 270,000 acres along over 1,100 miles of 86 rivers in Oregon, Utah, California, Idaho, Arizona, Wyoming, Massachusetts and Vermont. These protections are an investment in the future as they will conserve precious resources such as clean drinking water and provide fantastic hunting, fishing and boating recreation. The bill also contains dozens of proposals that will protect new wilderness areas, Civil War battlefields, and heritage areas.
Forty years ago, amid rampant dam building, the U.S. Congress recognized the importance of protecting America's last remaining free-flowing rivers by passing the National Wild & Scenic Rivers Act. Enactment of the law in 1968 signified a fundamental shift in the way we value rivers. For the first time in our nation's history we embraced conservation of rivers for their inherent unique qualities and free-flowing nature as wild and scenic.
Over 3,500 rivers have been found to be eligible for Wild and Scenic designation nationwide. Please help ensure these 86 are protected permanently with a Wild and Scenic River designation. Please vote YES on final passage of H.R. 146.
Thank you for your consideration.
