there are times when someone dies unexpectedly and leaves a widow who has no means of support and in todays economy a widow that is 55 years old has no possibility of finding a job especially if they have been out of the work field for a while or has no training. What are they to do? They are told they can not get widows pension until they are 60.They are a widow at 55 the same as they will be at 60 That is not right. The spouse worked and contributed to the social security fund to help someone who needed funds then the widow should be able to use funds to survive when they become a widow not when they reach 60 years of age. Waiting 5 years is a long time to try and survive with no means. This feeling of desperation could cause suicides, people becoming homeless and going hungry.
