In October 2009, President Obama stood before 3000 people at the annual HRC Gala in Washington DC, and before millions on C-Span, and vowed to support LGBT equality by ending Don't Ask Don't Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act.
In that same speech, the President called on gays and lesbians to partner with him in these efforts and to hold him accountable for these promises.
Send President Obama the message that we are looking to him to lead in these areas. The repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell is now being discussed, but the process of actually finalizing that change of policy requires much more work and support from the White House. We are still waiting for a clear call to end Defense of Marriage.
The President's promises to gays and lesbians
Mr. President:
Mr. President:
Last October, your LGBT audience was electrified when you spoke at the HRC Gala. We celebrated your impending signing of the Mathew Shephard Act protecting us. We cheered when you vowed to end Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. And we listened and accepted the challenge when you asked us to partner with you in these efforts and called on us to hold you accountable for these promises.
We’ve been doing our part, Mr. President, as demonstrated by shifting public opinion in our favor. Now it’s time for you to act, to speak out, and to stand by your promises.
We call on you to lead on all these issues of equality:
• to continue publicly supporting the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and to encourage the Pentagon to bring change swiftly;
• to proclaim to the world that LGBT people are not second class citizens and deserve full rights and protections under the law;
• to share the message that “Defense of Marriage” is really nothing more than institutionalized bigotry.
We look to you to lead the change you promised to America’s LGBT population.
Thank you,
