Right now, utility companies and their coal-state defenders in Congress are wrecking America's last, best chance to solve global warming. Climate champions Rep. Markey and Rep. Waxman have introduced a comprehensive energy and climate bill, which Big Oil and Coal are working tirelessly to weaken. They are pushing for free carbon permits that will take them off the hook for their pollution, leaving YOU to foot the bill.
Please take action right now. Tell Congress not to support corporate welfare and rate-payer ripoffs in the evolving Waxman-Markey climate bill. The only fair way to transition off of fossil fuels is to auction all pollution permits and rebate most of the money to consumers like you.
Write an email to your Congressperson asking them to reject free permits to big polluters>>
Again, the best solution is to rebate carbon money to consumers. This concept is masterfully outlined in the Cap and Dividend Act of 2009 introduced by Congressman Chris Van Hollen. The bill proposes a "carbon cap" that is simple, fair, and built to last. While this bill is unlikely to pass in its current form, we are pushing for its concepts to be adopted in the ultimate climate bill. Watch this 7-minute video and forward this op-ed I wrote for the Baltimore Sun to all your friends.
The U.S. EPA reported last month that "free permits" to polluters were unfair and costly, and that rebates to consumers like you made better economic sense. Not it's your turn to tell Congress.
Thanks for all you do.
Best,

Right now, utility companies and their coal-state defenders in Congress are wrecking America’s last, best chance to solve global warming. By insisting on free pollution permits, the nation’s biggest utilities like Dominion, Pepco, and BG&E are pushing for legislation that is complicated, unfair, and destined to fail.
