Reauthorize the Indian Health Care Improvement Act

Adequate health care services are as important to the Native American community as they are to every other community in the nation. Treatment, however, is not as readily available, facilities are not as modern, and most importantly, funding is not as accessible.

The Indian Health Care Improvement Act administered by the United States Department of Health and Human Services through Indian Health Services provides the funding for American Indian and Alaska Native health care.

The Indian Health Care Improvement Act is currently before Congress for reauthorization. Reauthorization of the Act would provide funding for much needed services in the Native American community, including critical health promotion and disease prevention programs. Native Americans have higher rates of diabetes, tuberculosis, alcoholism, substance abuse and suicide among youth than most other communities in the nation. The conditions require tailored health treatment and a focus on preventation and health promotion.

Sign the below petition and urge Republicans in Congress to reauthorize the Indian Health Care Improvement Act.

Sign the PetitionThe Democratic Party understands the health care obstacles that Native Americans currently face and will continute to face if the Indian Healthcare Improvement Act is not reauthorized.

We support tribal efforts to be self-sufficient and believe that federal laws, treaties, and trusts in this regard should be honored.

We urge you to fight for adequate healthcare services for Native Americans and Alaskan Natives and demand you to reauthorize of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act.
