Putting Medical Research to Work
The Issue
Very little medical research ever gets out of the lab, not because it wouldn't save lives, but because the current research and drug development system puts major barriers in the way of applying research in the real world.
Putting that huge pool of untapped knowledge to work could be facilitated by a few changes in government policy.
Michael KellyPetition StarterOne of my ancestors was a founder of Jamestown, a great-grandfather was a Texas Ranger, another was an Oklahoma oil banker. My dad was a fighter pilot. I come from a long line of explorers—Jim Bowie for instance (no kidding).
In a recent project we created a sustainability strategy for mid-coast Maine; www.waterville-me.gov/catalyst.htm. We did this through a non-profit I helped found 15 years ago www.runningstart.org. I'm a consultant. For the Office of the Secretary of Energy, my firm facilitated the re-organization and opening of the first successful nuclear waste storage facility in the United States (WIPP). I have also had many assignments in private industry (Xerox, Maytag, Lockheed Martin) facilitating the creation or implementation of corporate strategy. I have a talent for getting hard headed people to play together productively. I attribute that to several decades spent studying collective intelligence.
