Put a stop to "virtual strip searches"

Prevent your naked image from being captured by airport security The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has announced plans to screen airline passengers with a system that captures a detailed image of a person stripped naked.  This process is called Whole Body Imaging. The TSA has changed its policy to make Whole Body Imaging its primary screening tool, instead of a backup system.

Consumer Action, in coalition w/ the Electronic Privacy Information Center's (EPIC) campaign to stop Whole Body Imaging, has written to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security strongly opposing this tool and urging them to suspend the program until privacy and security risks are fully evaluated.

The TSA has installed Whole Body Imaging systems in at least 19 airports throughout the nation. (For a list of airports using Whole Body Imaging please scroll down).

The screening system creates a very detailed image that is displayed to a TSA employee in another location and is not intended to be stored, but the device is designed to zoom in and capture images of people undressed. TSA has reversed its plans for using this system as an alternative to a physical pat down. What will stop it now from reversing its plans not to store these images?

Consumer, privacy, religious and civil rights groups have insisted that the government suspend use of the imaging system as a primary screening tool, allow time for public comment, and clearly disclose to consumers the type of screening they are about to undergo, prior to use.

If used as a secondary screening, individuals should be made aware of an alternative, which for now is a physical pat down. Consumers should be offered a less invasive means of screening.

The groups also seeks a full investigation into the health implications of  repeated exposure to Whole Body Imaging.

Congressman Jason Chaffetz ( R-UT) has proposed a bill (HR 2024) that would ban the use of Whole Body Imaging as a primary screening tool.
Let Secretary Janet Napolitano (U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security) know that you do not want to be 'virtually' strip searched to maintain national security.
