Push Congress for Nuclear Disarmament

Push Congress for Nuclear Disarmament
The Issue
Please take a minute this holiday season to write your Representative, letting him or her know you want our budget to reflect a vision of security that prioritizes children's well-being over a large nuclear arsenal. Ask your Representative to Co-Sponsor the Global Security Priorities Resolution H Res. 278. Click here to send a message.
The resolution, introduced by Representatives Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Dan Lungren (R-CA) supports US and Russian negotiations for the mutual reduction of nuclear stockpiles. If passed, the savings from the reductions in nuclear weapons will be invested in programs that secure and dismantle nuclear materials in former Soviet nations, and increase funding in food and educational programs for children in the world's most needy countries.
The legislation would accomplish two important objectives, increasing emphasis on security measures that prevent instability by addressing human needs, and lending much needed support to President Obama's call for a nuclear weapons-free world.
Congressional measures for nuclear disarmament are especially important now. The Obama Administration is currently in negotiations with Russia for a new treaty (START) to mutually reduce the two countries nuclear arsenals, and in May 2010 the 5 year review conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty will be held at the United Nations in NYC, providing an important opportunity for President Obama to take leadership by introducing stronger measures for nuclear disarmament and abolition.
Thanks for all that you do in support of nuclear disarmament. I look forward to keeping you updated on the progress we make and more opportunities to take action.
Sincerely,
Kevin M. Martin
