I recently did a web search because I wanted to volunteer and get involved, and I was not able to find a crisis line, contact number or a webpage indicating there was any Suicide Prevention Plan in existence in all of Puerto Rico. After contacting the Suicide Prevention Resource Center which also listed No Plan and No Contacts, more research was done. We discovered that their program was tied in with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health departments and although there are numerous Substance Abuse facilities and many clinics, we were still unable to find a suitable plan.

One problem we encountered, which made it extremely difficult to make much progress or find any information, was the absence of a webpage in English. I feel it's very important that there is an easier way for someone in crisis to find help, and a better plan and a webpage in both languages would be a start!

I think that it's important that a specific budget directed towards a Suicide Prevention Plan only should be implemented since the focus of the money intended for this cause seems to be used elsewhere.  I think that it's important that an outreach program is implemented so there is more awareness and so the general populous has a crisis line staffed with counselors available as well as phone operators, and that phone number should be advertised and circulated so those in crisis are aware there is help available, and so they know who to call.
