BACKGROUND / HISTORY:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Global Food Security Act of 2009 is a scam
that will have disastrous consequences while lining the pockets of corporate CEOs and destroying the possibilities of the poor to provide for themselves organically the way Nature meant for food to be produced.
The wording on the embedded petition on this site about this act is extremely obscure. It is not possible to know exactly what one is voting for by signing it. A couple of us cannot tell if this is referring to the bill that Organic Consumers Association warns us against.

Support Global Food Security Act

Dear Representative,

I was pleased to hear President Obama use the recent G20 Summit in London to call for increased funding for global food security. I urge you to do all you can to see that those new funds are allocated and, importantly, that we have a solid plan to leverage food aid as part of the broader fight against poverty.

Specifically, I am asking you to support a comprehensive strategy that coordinates the myriad agencies involved in implementing food security policy. This strategy also should address the continuum of food security, from emergency response to safety nets and social protection to long-term agriculture development. Such a strategy would increase the effectiveness and efficiency of U.S. assistance and address acute and chronic hunger. Supporting the Lugar-Casey Global Food Security Act of 2009 is a crucial first step.

President Obama acknowledged that the global economic crisis affects us all -- but none more than the billions already living in extreme poverty. This crisis provides an opportunity to build a new system that would help people access resources and tools to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. Thank you.

OCA, Organic Consumers Association EDITABLE PETITION TEXT:

SUBJECT: Stop the Global Food Security Act

The UN recently released a report saying that Africa's best hope for the future is organic agriculture. Yet the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has passed S.384, the Global Food Security Act, that would require "research on biotechnological advances appropriate to local ecological conditions, including genetically modified technology" as a condition of US aid.

Instead of cynically cloaking corporate welfare for chemical companies like Monsanto in agriculture aid packages, why not support the United Nations Environment Program's Green Economy Initiative?

A new survey by the UN Conference on Trade and the Environment and UNEP in East Africa found that over 90 per cent of studies show that organic or near organic agriculture had benefits for soil fertility; water control; improved water tables, carbon sequestration and biodiversity.

This allows farmers to extend the growing season in marginal areas. The research in East Africa was among 1.6 million organic or near organic farmers from seven countries working on 1.4 million hectares.

Other findings include an increase in crop yields of 128 per cent since switching.

Higher incomes too as a result of not having to buy fertilizers and pesticides; more food availability; higher prices paid through certification schemes for both export and domestic markets-addresses poverty in environmentally friendly way.

Close to 90 per cent of cases showed increase in farm and household incomes and because organic agriculture is more knowledge intensive it has lead to improvements in education; community bonds and cooperation on market access.

The report concludes: "Organic and near-organic agricultural methods and technologies are ideally suited for many poor, marginalized smallholder farmers in Africa, as they require minimal or no external inputs, use locally and naturally available materials to produce high-quality products, and encourage a whole systemic approach to farming that is more diverse and resistant to stress."
