Provide Legal Pathway to Citizenship for Immigrant Children

Dear Representative,

As a concerned citizen, I am writing to urge you to co-sponsor the DREAM Act – the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act (H.R. 1751). This bill provides promising immigrant students an earned pathway to citizenship through higher education or service in our armed forces.

Each year 65,000 undocumented students graduate from high school with limited options, limited hope for the future. Many of these students were brought to the United States as small children without individual choice in the matter. Although these youth have grown up here, based on their citizenship status, they are ineligible to serve in the military, receive federal funding for higher education, be considered for in-state college tuition, or work legally in this country. These students hold great potential to use their talents to improve our communities, protect our national borders, and add to the economy, if only given the chance to succeed. Furthermore, without options for their future, these youth are at risk for anxiety and depression, low-wage exploitative jobs, and high-risk behaviors.

The DREAM Act would provide an earned legal pathway to citizenship for undocumented youth who pursue higher education, or even serve in the U.S. military. By investing in them through this bill, you can ensure our country is safer and more productive as a result. Having grown up here, these students are dedicated to our country’s success.

The time to pass the DREAM Act is now! Immigration reform must be a priority for our country and as a bipartisan bill, the DREAM Act should be moved along immediately.
