The Issue

We believe that it is appropriate to preface the following remarks by making it clear that we are not historically in the group that might be termed "no People".  We favor sensible concepts that can enhance everyone's quality of life.

Missing from the recent discussions about contributing more public money to a private developer's plan for baseball in Third Ward, is any discussion about what might be the advantages of using this land for public purposes, year 'round.

Mecklenburg history, both recent and long term, has given us an extraordinary opportunity to maximize the potential value of these acres, as well as the surrounding property.  It is well known that nothing attracts quality development as much as a park, and it is virtually miraculous that this southern boom-city would have this much vacant land in the heart of our city.  An amazing gift, if we seize the opportunity.

We stress that given the present economic climate using public funds in a risky private venture is not a conservative approach.  Just grass seed would be a good start. Literally, the beginning of a "grass-roots" movement, a movement that certainly might benefit from naming rights for different elements in the park.

These are austere times, but our future needs are great, and must be met.  So let's be smart, keep faith with the voters, and use the assets we have, and develop them in a smart, exciting way, while creating a unique attraction for this city.
