The previous dissappointing announcement by President Obama that millions of acres of offshore waters will be opened to drilling for oil and gas was a bad step backward in our quest for cleaner, sustainable energy. Offshore reserves are predicted to be less than 10% of our needs, they will take years before they produce, and the result will be more carbon dioxide and great danger to precious coastal and offshore ecosystems.  We should be plowing the same money, or more, into solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal and other green, sustainable sources, and new ways to use energy more efficiently.  I ask Washington to halt that erroneous quest and instead emphasize energy efficiencies, sustainability and low environmental impact.  As well, for e.g., a green jobs movement can be effectively started by a greening and upgrading of the national electric grids, which would also be a stimulus program; as the 10 % that everyone would save on their electric bills would be spent by them.
