Protect our natural resources and our quality of life

Greetings,

Nash County is the WRONG location for the proposed slaughterhouse, hatchery and poultry waste spray field.

"About 100 U.S. poultry workers have died on the job during the past decade, and more than 300,000 have been injured. The industry's death and injury rates are higher than those for manufacturing as a whole. For many workers -- including those who suffer amputations, chemical burns and debilitating hand or wrist ailments -- on-the-job injuries have left a lasting mark". -Charlotte Observer article, The perils of processing posted June 25, 2010.

The slaughterhouse will bring to the community at least a 15% increased demand on your DRINKING water supply or 1.5 million gallons a DAY; a potential threat to water levels of private wells surrounding the plant, due to the increased pumping of your groundwater. The factory farms will bring high levels of ARSENIC found in poultry manure that will contaminate nearby streams and unregulated air and water pollution: there are no public protections in place and the farms are never inspected: these factors put your health at risk.

Second, poultry slaughterhouse jobs are of poor quality: Sanderson Farms’ jobs require 8 hours per day doing repetitive motion activities that will destroy a person’s body in 5 years or less. Sanderson Farms tells us that only about 75% of the employees make it through the first year, yet they have not told us how many people make it through year 2-3-4-5.

Sanderson Farms targets people with few options, hires them to work in their facility, uses them for a few years, gives them repetitive motion injuries, and then sends them back into the community to be cared for. This all means that the health of our farmers, friends, kids, communities and Tar River will be SEVERLY DAMAGED.

Once again, Nash County is the WRONG location for the proposed slaughterhouse, hatchery and poultry waste spray field.
