Take the Chernobyl option now! Entomb the Fukushima reactors!
The Issue
It is time to do what we did at Chernobyl: entomb the Fukushima reactors.
Reactors 1, 2, and 3 melted down at Fukushima. Yet TEPCO and nuclear scientists told Senator Wyden on April 16, 2012, that the technology to clean up the disaster won't exist for another TEN YEARS. Reactor 4 is dangerously unstable and showed signs of hypercriticality last summer. In a desperate attempt to cool the melted reactors, for thirteen months, TEPCO has been pouring water over the spent fuel rods and pools of melted radioactive material, with no end in sight. Radiation has spread across the globe from radioactive water TEPCO dumped into the ocean, and the radioactive steam that has poured into the air currents.
Scientific American reported that sea kelp on the west coast of the US is contaminated from radioactive iodine. Radioactivity from Fukushima steam has affected areas as far away as Boulder, Colorado.
According to Gundersen, the exposed reactors and fuel cores are continuing to release microns of caesium, strontium, and plutonium isotopes. These are referred to as "hot particles." Hot particles have spread across Japan, found even in Tokyo. These have continued to fall and are being deposited in high concentrations. A lot of people are picking these up in car engine air filters.
Radioactive air filters from cars in Fukushima prefecture and Tokyo are now common, and Gundersen says his sources are finding radioactive air filters in the greater Seattle area of the US as well.
Eight US cities had a 35% spike in infant mortality shortly after the Fukushima melt downs. The eight cities included in the report are San Jose, Berkeley, San Francisco, Sacramento, Santa Cruz, Portland, Seattle, and Boise, and the time frame of the report included the ten weeks immediately following the disaster.
The people of the world must now demand that the Chernobyl Option be put into play and begin a complete entombment of the Fukushima 1, 2, 3, and 4 reactors in concrete, placing millions of tons of lead laden concrete underneath the effected reactors so the molten fissile material is slowed in its melt down process.
Tell TEPCO: we cannot wait ten years for a solution.
