Update: In recent developments, EPA has fined Waste Management, Inc. $300,000 for illegally disposing of its PCB wastes. At the same time, a state report concluded it could find no connection between the birth defects and Waste Management, Inc. Local activists, however, said the report was incomplete. While environmental pollution cases are notoriously difficult to prove, what is clear is that this community has suffered enough environmental pollution, and should not have to bare the brunt of an exansion of this dump. Please continue to sign this petition.

In Kettleman City, a low-income California farm town, there are between 30 and 64 births each year. So it's startling that in the last three years, at least 11 babies born there have suffered severe birth defects, including cleft palates. Worse, one was stillborn, and three died.

Now, the owners of a toxic waste dump connected to the tragedy want to double its size--and the community is fighting back.
