President of the United States, Barack Obama: National Ban on the use of gas in the euthanasia of companion animals
The Issue
The following has a history of gas chambers that addresses the cruelty of the method and why the United States enacted a law to ban the gassing of human beings: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas_chamber. However we continue to use this cruel and inhumane method to dispose of our animal population. This barbaric practice is still in use in a number of our states. Some forward looking states have already taken action to ban this method of euthanasia, but the change is not happening fast enough and we believe this issue deserves national attention. Congressman Jim Moran, Northern Virginia Democrat and co-chair of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, introduced a resolution, H. Res. 736, opposing the use of gas chambers to euthanize shelter animals. The resolution calls for states to alternatively use established injectable euthanasia drugs and ensure that appropriate training and certification in these methods is widely available.
