Evict homophobic Chick-Fil-A from KSU's Carmichael Student Center
The Issue
Greetings
For years, Kennesaw State University has included with in its mission statement the following sentence: "Faculty, staff and administrators [of Kennesaw State University] are committed to providing a challenging and facilitative collegiate environment that fosters ... global and multicultural perspectives." And, for much of the time the above sentence has been within Kennesaw State University's mission statement, Chick-fil-A has sat in the Carmichael Student Center and served chicken sandwiches.
It was not until this month, July 2012, that Kennesaw State University's mission statement's veracity was put into jeopardy. This month, Dan Cathy, CEO of Chick-fil-A said, during an interview with the Baptist Press, that Chick-fil-A is "very much supportive of the family"--that is, "the biblical definition of the family unit": one man and one woman. However, this request for Chick-fil-A's eviction from Kennesaw State University's campus is not just about "gay" marriage, in addition to Chick-fil-A's CEO making blatantly heterosexist and homophobic comments, Chick-fil-A's charitable arm, The WinShape Foundation, has donated over $4,000,000.00 to anti-LGBTQ organizations like the Marriage and Family Foundation, the Family Research Council, and the National Christian Foundation.
It is the opinion of many students, faculty and staff members, as well as people in the university's local community that believe that Kennesaw State University must make a choice to either up hold the inclusivity as outlined in their mission statement or to gravely disappoint not only the university's large LGBTQ population, but also the great many faculty, staff members and local community members.
Kennesaw State University's Office of Diversity and Inclusion's Mission Statement:
https://web.kennesaw.edu/diversity_inclusion/content/mission-goals
"The Office of Diversity and Inclusion works in alliance with students, faculty, administrators, staff and the surrounding community to promote Kennesaw State University’s vision of developing a strong multicultural, diverse and inclusive educational environment. Kennesaw State University is committed to producing well-educated students and future leaders who are well-prepared to effectively compete in a global society as well as to support continuous professional development opportunities and provide a wide range of resources to faculty, administrators and staff in order to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion awareness."
