Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetic disorder, present at birth, which affects 20,000 – 30,000 people in the United States. WS is characterized by a typical facial appearance and medical and developmental problems such as cardiovascular disease, and learning disabilities. Individuals with Williams syndrome also often exhibit striking abilities such as advanced verbal skills, highly sociable personalities and an affinity for music.

It is likely that as many as 60% of individuals with WS are mis-diagnosed or not diagnosed at all. Therefore, they are not receiving the valuable programs and services that can help them reach their full potential, and the specialized medical care that is often needed.

In an effort to generate awareness about Williams syndrome and raise funding for critical programs and initiatives of the Williams Syndrome Association, we ask that the President officially recognize the month of May as Williams Syndrome Awareness Month.
