Anti-immigrant activists want to strip United States citizenship, guaranteed by the 14th Amendment, from the children of the undocumented.

For over a century and a half any baby born in the U.S. has been an American citizen. Under the anti-immigrant proposal to check the immigration papers of the parents of newborns, all Latinos will be suspected of being in the country illegally, even if they were born here.

Sign this petition to help the New York State Immigrant Action Fund protect the rights of everyone born in our great country, no matter what the immigration status of their parents are.

Preserve the 14th Amendment

Greetings,

I am writing to tell you that I am deeply offended by efforts to change the interpretation or language of the 14th Amendment in order to disqualify the children of undocumented immigrants from United States citizenship.

The current campaign to strip citizenship from the U.S.-born children of immigrants seeks to divide our people for crass political gain. A system in which mothers giving birth will be asked for immigration documents in the delivery room is impractical and inhumane.

The 14th Amendment was passed to end civil discrimination based on the color of a person’s skin. Abolishing birthright citizenship will impose a new stigma on Latino and other non-white children born here.

I urge you to speak forcefully against changing the 14th Amendment.
