Preserve Pleasure Point
The Issue
PETITION: Make your voice heard regarding the East Cliff Parkway Project
The Redevelopment Agency (RDA) of Santa Cruz County is scheduled to initiate the East Cliff Parkway Project in Pleasure Point in upcoming weeks. This massive redevelopment project threatens the character of the landscape, atmosphere, neighborhood and the community.
Last week, the RDA delivered mail inserts informing neighborhood residents that construction would begin by the end of the June, however the work scope, timeframes, characteristics, and prioritization of the project stages were not described. The RDA webpage dedicated to the project has not been updated since at least December of 2010, there have not been recent (2011) meetings, nor are there upcoming community meetings regarding the project. Minutes from prior RDA community meetings are not published.
Some items & community concerns that remain unaddressed are:
1. What is the finalized scope of work? Which parts of the project are to be initiated first? What is the timeframe/schedule for the various aspects of the project?
2. How will traffic & pedestrian access be affected? During what timeframes? Have accommodations been made for heavy summer usage?
3. Where does the 42-inch fence begin and end? What impact will the fence have surf access points / high tide escape routes in between the two sets of stairs? Will there be breaks in the fence? If so, where?
4. There are concerns that the benches at 35th avenue will be removed, this tranquil spot is important to the neighborhood and community and it needs to be preserved. Will benches be strategically placed to replicate the unobstructed views we current have?
5. There are concerns that Jay Moriarty’s tiki in Pleasure Point Park will be removed—this tribute is very important and sentimental to many people. It needs to be preserved.
6. Will access to the Dirt Farm be blocked?
7. What are the widths of proposed walkways and bikelanes?
As residents, neighbors, community members, surfers, dogwalkers, etc, WE DESERVE:
1. Full transparency from the county on upcoming plans impacting our neighborhood & way of life
2. To have a say in the Redevelopment plans of our neighborhood & access to plans WELL BEFORE CONSTRUCTION BEGINS
3. County recognition & incorporation of community concerns
