Maintain Joe Arnstein as a teacher at PHS
Maintain Joe Arnstein as a teacher at PHS
The Issue
Mr. Arnstein can not and should not lose his position as an educator at PHS.
Due to the recent events covered by the media, many people fear that the school board may release teacher Joe Arnstein from employment. Though what he did may have caused discomfort in a student, this has been dealt with by the school. By creating an unnecessary lawsuit, there may be a chance Arnstein might be fired or pushed into an "early retirement". To let a man lose his career over a matter the school district has already handled is unthinkable and immoral. Arnstein must hold his position at the school, even under these pressing circumstances.
Arnstein's teaching styles, though funny to some, may upset others. Because of this, the school took disciplinary action and Mr. Arnstein showed penance. This lawsuit can not and should not result in the school having to make any sacrifice. Arnstein has already been punished, and this lawsuit is only trying to bleed old wounds.
For all those who have had Arnstein as a teacher, his teaching style is unorthodox to say the least. But through engaging his class and keeping students attentive, this unorthodoxy proves extremely effective. Students of Arnstein's learn subjects ranging from grammar, to history, to how to change a tire. Students will always remember the Latin ballad "O Subjunctive Tree" or the poetry of Homer's The Odyssey. Few other teachers at Portsmouth High School have the experience or natural teaching ability as Arnstein.
One student says, "The beauty in Arnstein's style is that he is able to instill within his students not only the language that he is teaching them, but a huge number of unforgettable lessons regarding life in general." Mr. Arnstein has been teaching at the high school for almost thirty years. He is an icon and a recognizable symbol of education.
Another student states that, "Mr Arnstein actually immersed us into what we were learning about." Portsmouth High School has ninety minute blocks, making it incredibly difficult for students to maintain attention. With Mr. Arnstein, constant thinking forces students to be active participants in discussion and activities.
Don't allow Joe Arnstein to lose his job and life thanks to this lawsuit. He has taught the beauty of Latin for so long that he has begun to see children of old students. After teaching for so long, it would be unjust to let him go like this. Few teachers can effect the students of Portsmouth High School as greatly as him, and his lessons can still be beneficial for years to come. Please, let Arnstein maintain his position as Latin, Spanish, and life teacher.
