The Issue
The residents of Pulau Ketam sent about 300 stray dogs to exile on a remote island where the harsh conditions almost certainly guarantee a horrible death. The dogs that were turned to cannibalism after weeks of starvation.
Residents of a fishing village on Pulau Ketam (island off Selangor), caught the dogs and took them to the islands covered in mangroves. The press reported that the villagers said they never intended to be cruel and that they believed the dogs could feed on the deserted islands' wildlife.
The plight of the dogs ignited outrage after activists released photographs showing dogs eating the carcasses of ones that had died.
Spaying and neutering helps stem the tide of overpopulation. The real answer to the massive street animal population is to adopt a sterilisation programme. A no kill policy. It must be a national priority to reduce the number of stray animals over time. Education, too, is an essential part of solving this problem.
