The Issue
My husband is currently being detained at the Kromes Detention Center in Miami and was moved to a County Jail to make room for Haitian refugees, and Homeland Security is trying to deport him. My husband received a final order of deportation in Sept 2004 because he failed to attend a hearing. I am a United States Citizen and we were married in August 2005, since the beginning of our marriage I have fought to reverse this order and proceed with helping my husband obtain permanent residence through our marriage I have an approved I-130 waiting for him since 2006. My husband is a good man and deserves a chance to obtain legal residence here, If my husband is deported myself, and my three year old daughter will lose our only source of income. My husband also helps supports three children from a previous marriage. I am a full time student and I have been forced already to give up school due to these circumstances, if my husband is deported my child will be left fatherless for 10 years. I may be forced to rely on public assistance for help in supporting my daughter. My husband is not a criminal and simply missed a court date, I do not feel that splitting up a family that wants to be together, and punishing a three year old girl leaving fatherless ten years is a fair punishment for a missed court hearing. I also do not believe that detaining a man in a detention center for criminals is fair punishment for a missed court date. I have done everything that the system has asked and they do not want to help us. My husband has not been hiding or running from DHS and in fact showed up for an appointment with DHS as told and instead of seeing that we are a family and we are trying everything that we can to make this situation right, he was taken away from his family.
