Staffing by numbers instead of patient acuity is a dangerous and irresponsible trend that is practiced by many money-driven hospitals. Research has proven that increased registered nurses at the bedside greatly improves patient outcomes and actually decreases health care costs in the long run. But unfortunately, money-driven hospitals only care about the bottom line here and now. Nurses are forced to work short-staffed which jeopardizes patient safety not to mention nurses' livelihoods as they can face losing their license to practice if and when something goes tragically wrong as a result of being spread too thin. At one time or another, everyone will find themselves or a loved one as a patient. Everyone deserves adequate nursing care. Proper, safe staffing saves lives.
