Rep Gutierrez introduced his version of a Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill on Dec 15th, 2009. Unfortunately, LGBT Families are not included in his bill, CIR ASAP, Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity Act.
We are disappointed that LGBT Families are not included in his bill and want to express our disappointment to his office. At the same time, we continue to work towards making sure that LGBT Families will be included in the final bill.
Rep Gutierrez's office needs to hear about our disappointment and work with his supporters to ensure that LGBT Families are included in the final version of the bill.
We encourage you to take part in this campaign by using one of four options:
(1) The O4I form letter provided below;
(2) Your own letter; or
(3) Creating a booklet telling your story. See http://tinyurl.com/o4i-toolkit1 for more info on this option.
(4) The easiest one. By clicking through and adding your name to this page, you would have sent the letter instanteneously. You can also provide the link to your friends and family to take action too!
Out4Immigration is an all grassroots organization. Each week we write to a list of representatives in Congress or the Senate to ask them to support equal immigration rights for Same-Sex Binational couples and to become a cosponsor of the Uniting American Families Act(UAFA) and to support an inclusive Comprehensive Immigration Reform that includes LGBT Families
Thank you for taking action!
Dear Rep Gutierrez
Dear Sir,
This letter is to go on record as an expression of my disappointment that LGBT families were not included in the immigration reform bill, the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity Act (CIR ASAP).
By omitting our families, yet signing onto H.R. 2709 (Reuniting Families Act) earlier this month and H.R. 1024 (Uniting American Families Act) back in February, you have sent a mixed message as to your true beliefs regarding our families. Do you believe, as your co-sponsorship of both the Reuniting Families Act (RFA) and Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) would indicate, that our families are of value? Or, do you believe, as your own CIR ASAP Act would indicate, that they are not, at least as far as immigration is concerned?
In introducing the bill, you are saying to the tens of thousands of LGBT Americans trying legally to sponsor their partners and families for immigration to this country that we do not matter. You actions also say that our second-class treatment under current U.S. immigration law is okay – there is no need to change the law to include us. By moving us not just to the back of the line, but out of the line entirely, you seemed to be telling us that this country does not care nor want to care about our families. Is this the message that you are trying to send?
I sincerely hope that your co-sponsorship of RFA and UAFA is more telling of your true beliefs than what we understand them to be in reading the bill. I would like to see you, Rep Gutierrez, issue an explanation as to why you have excluded our families from the bill and how you plan to rectify the situation.
Sincerely,
[Your name]
