When the first crime against a child was reported early in the 20th century, it was reported to the NY animal humane society because children had no organization to protect them.  Currently, there are nearly four children a day who die from crimes or abuse in America.  There are three million cases reported each year but the Department of Justice and experts say that the number is actually three times higher, putting it at nine million, because of unreported cases!

Today, we see commercials begging for your dollars to save an animal, or children in other countries, or an impoverished country ravaged by a natural disaster.  How can America protect the children of the world when we are not taking care of our children in our back yard?

We see Nancy Grace talking about children being murdered daily.   Family members and friends of one of the most recent child victims, Zahara Baker, openly admitted on national TV that they clearly knew of the abuse this little girl was enduring but did nothing about it.   The recent and long overdue acknowledgment of this rampant and hideous plague is a wonderful thing but is the media really addressing this epidemic and injustice toward America’s children?  Not if discussion does not include why citizens do not report abuses toward children.

Dr. Phil wants to create a national program where teens in school will learn about the consequences of bullying or domestic violence.  However, experts know children learn violence beginning as early as ages 2 or 3.  We need to begin these initiatives while children are still young and developing their ideas of the right and wrong ways to treat others.

Yes, preventing these atrocious crimes against children IS possible but only through getting the entire nation to rally behind our children.  We need to support organizations that are working hard to raise awareness and provide solutions.  Parenting education and awareness of the facts as well as tougher sentencing for violent abusers is needed.  We need the media to continue to report but we need them to explore why people do not involve themselves when it comes to crime against children.  We need politicians who truly care about children and wish to protect them and not plea bargain these cases.  We also need to allow our children to testify in court to help their abusers in jail.
