Almost daily, hundreds of hungry feral pigeons are snatched from city streets by criminal poachers that illegally transport them across state lines to be sold to Pennsylvania's Shooting Clubs.
Special celebrations are planned where these "sportsmen" and their families, engage in contest shoots of canned, disoriented, scared and starving wild birds that are catapulted out of small boxes where they have been kept for days.
Animal advocates organizations like the HSUS and S.H.A.R.K have tried repeatedly to ban pigeon shoot in Pennsylvania. But often they encounter oposition from officials, like Berks County District Attorney John T. Adams who, in spite of strong evidence (which included video), ordered animal cruelty charges withdrawn against the Pike Township Sportsmen's Association.
Among the activities of these so called " social clubs" are the following:
LIVE PIGEON SHOOT CLUBS: PENNSYLVANIA'S SHAME
Greetings Governor,
For at least the past 20 years, tens of thousands of birds have suffered while citizens, including PA's, have called for legislation banning pigeon and other birds shoots.
The fact is that the Pennsylvania Legislature has failed to pass any real animal protection legislation against the atrocities that your State's "sportsmen" barbarically indulge.
In pigeon shoots, birds are released one at time from boxes to be shot by individuals standing just a few yards away. The shooters are awarded prizes based on whether the wounded or dead animal lands inside a scoring area. During past live pigeon shoots, participants, that include children, have snipped the heads off live birds with gardening shears, beaten wounded pigeons against barrels, buried wounded animals with dead ones in containers and abandoned wounded animals. At least 1,000 birds are typically used for a one-day shoot.
It is extremely alarming that these barbaric shooters include their own children, even very young children, to partake and witness the bloodshed. Is not that child abuse?
We urge you to take the right, ethical action and, once and for all, BAN LIVE BIRD SHOOTS from your State.
There are many other ways to have a fun filled weekend with family, rather than to massacre helpless animals, we would be happy to offer some suggestions.
Respectfully,
[Your name]
