Petland Discounts - Provide proper care for animals and proper information on how to look after them for all employees
The Issue
As I first discovered a love for animals, I regularly went to the local Petland Discounts store to look at all of the animals they had to offer. I later bought a number of different reptile species from this store, and cared for them FOLLOWING THE INFORMATION I WAS GIVEN BY PETLAND EMPLOYEES. Each and every animal eventually died. One such species I had was the Chinese Water Dragon. According to http://www.triciaswaterdragon.com/ , baby Water Dragons are healthy, inquisitive and active. My Water Dragon, however, refused even to eat, because, after a seach on the internet, it turned out the U.V level in the tank was not high enough. However, it was too late to buy another light, and the next day my Water Dragon died.
The day my Water Dragon died I went to the store to complain that they had given me insufficient information. The people who worked there, however, ONE OF WHICH WAS THE MANAGER, said that I had clearly not followed the information correctly, and that I had "tampered with the lamp" even though I had followed their exact instructions.
I decided then to reaseach the basic needs af all of the animals that petland owned, from frogs to chinchillas, and went in to the petstore to have a look at how they were treating the animals in the store. As I was in the store, I witnessed several employees encouraging a group of mice to gang up on another mouse. One of the mice was clearly badly hurt, and had a number of injuries such as a bitten tail and bloody fur. This mouse then collapsed on the floor of the tank, exausted from its injuries. The next day I came back and this mouse was dead, still inside the tank. When i pointed this out to the employees they said that "one dead mouse doesn't make a huge difference to the living conditions in the tank".
The next few times I went into this store I noticed that a large number of animals were injured, dead, diseased, improperly housed or malnourished. I kept on pointing this out to the employees and the people in the store and I was eventually framed by one of the employees for a robbery of a hampster bowl, even though I do not own a hamster. I was subsequently banned from coming into this store, and was told if i did again they would call the police.
The actions carried out in this store are not unique amongst this chain. I have been to many different petland stores, and all of them have animals which have been badly treated. I call for a stop to this abuse and to bring proper treatment, for the animals and proper education for the petland staff on how to care for them.
