PETITION TO HAVE CHUCK BROWN "THE GODFATHER OF GOGO" HONORED WITH A LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT GRAMMY AWARD
The Issue
Chuck Brown (August 22, 1936 - May 16, 2012) is a guitarist and singer who is affectionately called "The Godfather of Go-go". Go-go is a genre of music created by Chuck Brown himself in Washington, D.C. in the mid- and late 1970s. Chuck Brown is the undisputed sole founder and creator Go-Go music, a hypnotically danceable genre deeply rooted in funk and soul that he developed in the early 70’s. Foreshadowing rap and many of the major popular R&B styles of the past three decades, Chuck's signature style earned him a place in American musical royalty. This esteem was maintained by the reputation of his legendary live shows, heavy on audience participation and built around “the beat” to create an unparalleled non-stop party atmosphere.
Brown's musical career began in the 1960s playing guitar with Jerry Butler and The Earls of Rhythm, joining Los Latinos in 1965. He still performs music today and is commonly known in the Washington, DC area as The Godfather Of GOGo. Brown's early hits include "I Need Some Money" and "Bustin' Loose". "Bustin' Loose" has been adopted by the Washington Nationals baseball team as its home run celebration song. Brown also recorded go-go covers of early jazz and blues songs, such as "Go-Go Swing" Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean a Thing If Ain't Got That Swing", "Moody's Mood for Love", Johnny Mercer's "Midnight Sun", Louis Jordan's "Run Joe", and T-Bone Walker's "Stormy Monday". Brown scored hits like “We The People” and “Blow Your Whistle” (sampled in Eve’s 2007 smash “Tambourine”) in the early 70’s, followed by the #1 national hit “Bustin’ Loose” on MCA/ Source in 1978 (used by Nelly in 2002 in his #1 smash"Hot in Herre."). Chuck Brown scored again in the early eighties with the Billboard charting “We Need Some Money,” followed by the massive worldwide cult masterpiece “Go-Go Swing,” making Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers a force to be reckoned with in innovative American music
He has influenced other go-go bands such as Big G and The Backyard Band, Rare Essence, Experience Unlimited (EU), Little Benny and the Masters, and Trouble Funk
.
In the 90's, after a string of popular live recordings, Chuck teamed up with Eva Cassidy on what was her debut release, a critically acclaimed album of jazz and blues duets entitled “The Other Side.” In the current decade, “Your Game... Live at the 9:30 Club” was voted as one of the top 10 albums of 2001 by Billboard’s R&B Editor, Rapper Chuck D and others. A live DVD came next, called “quite possibly the greatest live concert video/dvd I have ever seen” by Murder Dog Magazine.
Chuck Brown teamed up with multi-platinum producer Chucky Thompson (Mary J Blige, Nas, Faith Evans, Biggie, etc.) to put together his first new studio album of original material since Bustin’ Loose. The album was released on April 24, 2007 to critical acclaim, debuting in Billboard as the #1 Independent CD, the #2 R&B CD, and #37 on the top 200. The album’s first single, “Block Party,” landed in the top 20 on the Urban A/C chart. The music video to the second single “The Party Roll”, includes a comedic/dramatic intro with a George Bush look-a-like, and cameos in the music portion by George Clinton, Mya, Raheem DeVaughn, Anwan Glover (of HBO’s The Wire) and former DC mayor Marion Barry. Chuck just returned from a tour of Japan in February 2008. Check out Chuck's lead vocal on the new Thievery Corporation track "The Numbers Game." Video due out soon! Catch Chuck on an upcoming episode of The Gospel of Music with Jeff Majors, and on BET-J's Lyric Cafe.
The song "Ashley's Roachclip" from the Soul Searchers' 1974 album Salt of the Earth contains a famous drum break, sampled countless times in various other tracks.
In the mid-1990s, he performed the theme music of Fox's sitcom The Sinbad Show which later aired on The Family Channel and Disney Channel.
Brown is a worldwide legend and in Washington, D.C. is LOVED BY ALL, and has appeared in television advertisements for the Washington Post and other area companies. The D.C. Lottery's "Rolling Cash 5" ad campaign features Chuck Brown singing his 2007 song "The Party Roll" in front of various D.C. city landmarks such as Ben's Chili Bowl.
