As we learned last week, the NYPD has been monitoring the activities of Muslim college students in New York, and outside the borders of the city itself. This creates a climate of fear and alienates future American leaders from a particular religious tradition.

New York’s Finest must do better: don’t infiltrate, collaborate. Rather than sending undercover police to attend Muslim Student Association (MSA) meetings in secret, they should welcome MSA leaders from across the region to an open house.

By building stronger relationships with Muslim campus leaders -- rather than alienating them -- the NYPD can further its mission of keeping New York safe, while recognizing that Muslim students are allies, not adversaries.
