"I, the undersigned, hereby petition the Phoenix City Council to create a public dog park on the northern half of the block formerly filled by the Ramada Inn Phoenix Downtown, a 300 ft x 300 ft property at 401 NORTH FIRST ST., PHOENIX, AZ 85004.  The parking lot currently planned to fill this property will add to Phoenix' heat island effect and will encourage more and excessive downtown automobile traffic.  Our property values, and the desirability of our community, are based on both the current and potential 'pedestrianism' of downtown.  A new 90,000 sq. ft. parking lot is not needed and will reduce the value of our property and all downtown properties.  A dog park balancing a smaller parking lot will mitigate these effects."

Here are a few quick facts to note:

~There are 14,000 excess parking spaces in our downtown.

~There are over 800 dog owners within walking distance of the site in question.

~Phoenix's urban core already experiences an urban heat island effect of 5-12 degrees (depending on the study).  Asphalt parking lots only make that, and subsequently our EPA-sanctioned air quality, worse.

Also, if possible, please support "Puppies, Not Parking" at the hearing on Thursday 11/4 @ noon (City Council Chambers, 200 W. Jefferson St.)

re: the City’s proposed new parking lot for the Sheraton Hotel

Greetings,

I beseech you to side with the community and small businesses, rather than just large institutions, and build a temporary dog park on the northern half of the lot at 1st St & Taylor in downtown Phoenix. Another parking lot downtown is detrimental to the city which I call home. I do not support intensifying the urban heat island nor further promoting excessive automobile use downtown. Downtown is not just the massive corporations and institutions that do businesses here - it’s also the thousands of pioneering residents that have moved here under the promise of a more progressive direction getting our downtown back on track. Any respectable urban planner will tell you that a 90,000 sqft asphalt parking lot is quite the opposite of “back on track”. I would like to see the City and its seeming big-institution allies compromise with the citizen stakeholders of downtown, who don’t have a paid staff or a spokesman, and place a dog park on the northern half of the old Ramada Inn lot.

A dog park there would mitigate the negative externalities of a smaller parking lot by:
~motivating residential developers
~drawing residential demand
~giving current and future residents a direly needed function of urban life
~building community
~strengthening pedestrianism
~activating all the streets that connect with the dog park
~benefiting nearby small businesses, whom are hurting due to lack of foot traffic.

This compromise is truly a win-win for everyone. Please listen to the people of Phoenix on this issue, and not just the Sheraton Hotel.

Thank you
