Permanently Ban Traps and Snares in Mexican Wolf Recovery Areas

Permanently Ban Traps and Snares in Mexican Wolf Recovery Areas

The Issue

Recently, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson temporarily placed a ban on trapping in Mexican wolf (Canis lupus baileyi) recovery areas for six months while the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish studies the risks of traps and snares on wolves. A step in the right direction, to be sure, but traps don't discriminate between animal species and should not have been allowed in an endangered species' recovery zone in the first place.
