Jamie, thank you for bringing attention to this issue. My heart goes out to you, and to every college student who’s been held back because of a lack of support for their disability. In the 21st century, when higher education has become increasingly important and technology exists that can overcome many obstacles, we must address this problem.
Your struggle moved me. Because of this petition, I am now a proud cosponsor of the TEACH Act.
The TEACH Act (H.R. 3505) will ensure that technologies and instructional materials used at the college level meet the needs of students with disabilities. It will achieve this by having the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board to develop new guidelines for the use of technologies that are in compliance with provisions in the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act. Compliance will be easy for schools, because they will know that materials that conform to the guidelines are accessible.
These guidelines will ensure that each and every student has the opportunity to succeed. I am committed to providing disabled Americans the support they need to pursue their dreams and get the education they deserve.
