Since the beginning of May, some 2.3 million Pakistanis have fled their homes due to violence in and around the Swat Valley region. This mass exodus has caused an enormous humanitarian catastrophe that does not have a clear end in sight.
LIFE for Relief and Development is establishing a camp to provide emergency shelter for internally displaced families who have fled as a result of the military conflict in Pakistan's Swat Valley.
The camp, which is centered around six apartment buildings, a mosque, and a playground, is located in Rawalpindi along the main highway between the Punjab and the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP). Housing, food, medical services, and activities for children are the main offerings of the camp.
LIFE will coordinate its efforts with the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to screen those seeking refuge in the camps, which is scheduled to operate for at least two months, and perhaps longer if the IDPs cannot safely return home by then.
LIFE calls on its donors to contribute whatever they can afford to support this emergency relief campaign to help families whose entire lives have been uprooted and who face an uncertain future. Remember, all donations are tax-deductable and qualify as Zakat.
