Enforce the separation of church and state.
Enforce the separation of church and state.
The Issue
The Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed a resolution declaring 2012 to be the "Year of the Bible," which passed 193-0. The resolution was introduced by Representative Rick Saccone.
Text of HR-535: http://www.legis.state.pa.us/CFDOCS/Legis/PN/Public/btCheck.cfm?txtType=HTM&sessYr=2011&sessInd=0&billBody=H&billTyp=R&billNbr=0535&pn=2983
The resolution contains overtly religious declarations which clearly violate the separation of church and state. Let the Pennsylvania House of Representatives know that this inappropriate resolution is offensive, exclusionary, unwarranted, and against the Constitution.
Here are some of the delcarations included in this resolution:
"WHEREAS, The Bible, the word of God, has made a unique
contribution in shapingthe United States as a distinctive and
blessed nation and people."
"WHEREAS, Renewing ourknowledge of and faith in God through
holy scripture canstrengthen us as a nation and a people;
therefore be it RESOLVED, That the Houseof Representatives declare 2012 as
the “Year of the Bible”in Pennsylvania in recognition of both
the formative influenceof the Bible on our Commonwealth and
nation and our nationalneed to study and apply the teachings of
the holy scriptures."
These kinds of statements being issued by a government body are completely out of line and a clear violation of the separation of church and state.
