OSU Needs A Sexual Violence Policy

The Issue

One of the largest public universities in the country DOES NOT HAVE a sexual violence policy.  A network of concerned students is currently working to change this, but we need your help and solidarity!  Add your voice and tell Ohio State that we need a sexual violence policy!

Twelve years ago, students and faculty tried to fix this.  They wrote a document, and it was sent around from department to department, undergoing revisions and losing momentum.  Eventually, we ended up with our current Sexual Assault Resource Guide, which can be found here on the OSU website.

This document only applies to students, misses many key points, may be confusing to survivors, and its enforcability is ambiguous at best. We need a progressive policy that applies to all students, faculty, and staff, and includes everything from education and prevention, to survivors rights and courses of action, to OSU's judicial responsibilities.

Sexual misconduct is discussed in our current Student Code of Conduct but it is entirely insufficient. The Code mentions "non-verbal consent" which is not defined and can open up a lot of opportunities to delegitimize survivors.  The Code is currently up for revision, and we are working to make sure there is no ambiguity as to what consent is.  The current code can be found here and you can download our intended revisions here. As we are advised by other groups, this document is likely to change.  We want to make as many revisions ourselves so that we keep all of the content without creating loopholes.

We have valuable allies in Undergraduate Student government and also in OSU administration, but it is  not enough.  Without significant pressure from the OSU student body, and the community at large, history tells us it is unlikely that we will see the changes we want in a timely fashion, if at all.

Demand that OSU adopt a comprehensive sexual violence policy!
