Oppose ACTA

Oppose ACTA
The Issue
ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) is an agreement being negotiated to combat counterfeiting and piracy, but is a danger to the rights and freedoms to the American public.
ACTA is being negotiated to stop counterfeiting and piracy by putting Internet Service Providers in the position to police the actions of users that they feel are pirating materials.
ACTA also aims to attack citizens who use copyrighted material despite their actions having been protected by Fair Use and Fair Dealing, and attempts to make any citizen who uses copyrighted materials punishable even despite their actions being not for profit.
ACTA would require that users be disconnected from the Internet for using materials, require those citizens to pay heavy fines, and requires from the Internet Service Providers to hand over personal information even to other countries.
ACTA is being negotiated behind the backs of the American public, and does not represent the desires of the American public.
The fact that ACTA has been continuously kept secret from the American citizens, and is being pushed by only the companies who would profit from these agreements, at the detriment of the people, is very concerning.
ACTA would limit the freedoms of the American public, by not only limiting their ability to use resources due to copyright, but also createing an environment where citizens are to be exposed and prosecuted unfairly for actions that are currently legal, and gives the government the ability to police Internet Users.
ACTA is a threat to the freedom that we have as American citizens; it is a threat to our Liberty (the state of being free from restraint), and is a threat to our security.
We need to let our Congress know, we are not interested nor supportive of any actions that endanger our privacy and security, and their decisions go forward and sign this agreement without the approval of the people they govern is not appriciated and should not be tolerated.
