In 1954, the CIA led a violent coup to overthrow Jacobo Arbenz Guzman, the democratically elected president of Guatemala. Because of this unwarranted action, Guatemala has had 50+ years full of violence and civil bloodshed. More than 200,000 of students, workers, professionals, farmers and non-combatants have been killed, and more than one million people have become refugees. The country has never been the same since.

Please sign this petition to ask President Barack Obama to follow the precedent of the current Guatemalan Government and apologize for their actions of 1954.

En 1954, la CIA encabezo unviolento golpe para derrocar a Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán, el presidente de Guatemala elegido democráticamente.  Resultante de dicha acción sinprovocar, Guatemala ha experimentado más de 50 años llenos de violencia y derramiento de sangre civil.  Más que 200.000 estudiantes, trabajadores, profesionales, agricultores y civiles han sido matados, desaparecidos, torturados y más de un millón de personas han solicitado refugio.  El país nunca jamás ha sido el mismo desde entonces.

Por favor, firmen esta petición para pedir al presidente Barack Obama de seguir el precedente del Gobierno de Guatemala y pedir perdón para sus acciones de 1954.

Issue a formal apology to the people of Guatemala and the Arbenz Family

Dear President Obama, Sec. Clinton, and Ambassador Chacon:

In 1954, the CIA led a violent coup to overthrow Jacobo Arbenz Guzman, the democratically elected president of Guatemala. Because of this unwarranted action, Guatemala has had 50+ years full of violence and civil bloodshed. Please follow the precedent of the current Guatemalan Government and apologize for U.S. Government actions of 1954.
