NYC: Keep Your Bike Lanes, & Build More
The Issue
A critical Staten Island bike lane is being threatened by some local anti-cycling advocates, elected officials and staff, and a lack of public process. It has been announced that a large portion of the bike lane on Father Capodanno Boulevard will not be re-striped when the road is re-paved.
As local cycling advocates proclaim, this is a completely backwards move.
“The Bloomberg administration has apparently decided that the opposition of a few drivers and local political bosses can trump public process and the irrefutable evidence that bike lanes save lives and make streets safer for everyone,” Transportation Alternatives stated.
Cycling for transportation purposes needs support in order for the U.S. to address critical health, environmental, and economic concerns.
If cycling infrastructure is going to be removed on this street, improvements in other sustainable transportation options should at least be improved to compensate for that.
