Ocean City, Maryland, has abandoned its recycling program and will now be sending recyclable materials to be incinerated in the community of Chester, Pennsylvania. Chester burns more than enough trash and we can’t afford to take anymore. Chester has the highest infant mortality rate in the state of Pennsylvania. Chester has an extremely high lung cancer mortality rate. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Let’s say it together! NO MORE TRASH DUMPING ON CHESTER PEOPLE!
NO MORE OCEANS of TRASH DUMPED ON CHESTER CITY!
Dear Ocean City Mayor & Council,
We are aware that you have abandoned your recycling program and will now be sending recyclable materials to be incinerated in the community of Chester, Pennsylvania.
We also know that you have defended this change as a “rethinking strategy” in the face of budgetary concerns but we ask that you think harder:
Chester is one of the most dramatic cases of environmental injustice in the nation, with a disproportionate concentration of environmental hazards affecting the predominantly low-income and African American community. Waste facilities in Chester already generate 90% of all toxic chemical and criteria air pollutants released in the entire Delaware County.
As cities and residents across the nation become more conscious of their own environmental impact, we are horrified that you have chosen to neglect this responsibility by shifting the problem onto other communities. You practice NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) with little regard for how heavily burdened Chester is with incinerators along its waterfront.
Rather than 'rethinking' recyclable waste, you are forcing an overly polluted city like Chester to think about it instead. Your decision is a gross violation of Chester City's right to cleaner air and a healthier quality of life.
We are demanding that you manage your own recyclable trash and not dump OCEANS of trash on the residents of Chester City. We are demanding that you TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR RECYCLING and not rob Chester City of their right to ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE!
[Your name]
