No 2 Plastic Pollution (plastic bags & packaging)

Le problème

According to research data, Over 1 trillion plastic bags are used every year worldwide. Every time we walk into a store, supermarket, or grocer, we are handed plastic bags.

The bags are nondegradable and non-recyclable. It takes a plastic bag 1000 years to break up in small pieces, yet the vast majority of our leaders have failed to pass laws to reduce the environmental dispersion of plastic bags.

There are exceptions.

Last year, Wales introduced a 5p charge for every plastic bag. What happened? "Welsh supermarkets report reductions of up to 96% in the use of single-use bags since the charge was introduced."
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2012/jul/04/plastic-bag-use-5p-charge

in 2002 Ireland introduced the plastic bag levy at the rate of 15 cent which had an immediate effect on consumer behaviour with a decrease in plastic bag usage from an estimated 328 bags per capita to 21 bags per capita overnight.

The EU and USA need to follow these examples and implement effective legislature to reduce plastic waste. There are already 46,000 pieces of plastic floating in it every square mile of ocean... and they will be there for the next one thousand years.

Demand that the EU Parliament and the White House take action: sign the petition!

No 2 Plastic PollutionLanceur de pétitionEvery time I walk into a store, a supermarket or a grocer and I buy anything I am handed a plastic bag. Plastic bags are just the tip of the iceberg. Most of what we buy is packaged with plastic: yogurt pots, shrink-wrapped fruit, meat and fish, see-through packaging for toys--the list goes on and on. It takes a plastic bag one thousand years to degrade yet governments. What are our leaders doing about this? Very little. I read an article just today on the Independent.co.uk, which stated that the use of plastic bags in the UK is going up, and this provide the spark to get this petition started. I have created a Facebook page on which I will compile news and information related to the plastic bag pollution issues in superparkets and stores around the the EU and the USA. I hope that you will visit the page and contirbute posts and information, as well as ideas on how to tackle the problems. Thanks
