call on Costamare to donate to oil spill clean up
The Issue
The Rena oil spill off the coast of Tauranga in Aotearoa New Zealand’s Bay Of Plenty continues to unfold as the worst maritime disaster in New Zealand history -- yet the owners of the ship are ignoring New Zealanders' call for them to step up on funding the oil spill clean up.
New Zealanders have been outraged and shocked by this environmental disaster. We've volunteered long hours at the coastal cleanup sites and have spoken out in unprecedented numbers -- almost 5000 people have signed a petition calling on Costamare to fully fund the clean up -- but they refuse to answer our calls.
It’s time our politicians stood with New Zealanders and called on Costamare to go beyond what is legally required of them in helping with the clean up.
The cost of the clean up is going to run into the tens of millions of dollars and under the current laws Costamare may only face charges of $600,000. Costamare is a multi-million dollar company -- they must be held to account and front up for the true cost of this disaster.
With the election nearing, now is our opportunity to call on our political leaders to actually lead on this issue -- ensuring that Costamare are held to account and help meet the huge economic cost that will otherwise be burdened by New Zealand tax payers.
Help tell the New Zealand parliament to speak out against Costamare's failure to donate to help with the clean up costs!
