Hector's and Maui's dolphins are the world's rarest marine dolphin species. They occur only in New Zealand, Hector's off the South Island and Maui's of the North Island. Fishing with gill nets and trawling have driven both species to the very edge of extinction. Fishing is killing them 76 times faster than they can breed!

Since decades the government of New Zealand refuses to start a program to protect the world's smallest and rarest marine dolphin species. New Zealand is the only country to vote against further protection for the critically endangered Maui's dolphins at the world's largest conservation summit in 2012. For more than a decade, marine biologists and conservationists have called for a New Zealand-wide ban on gillnets. These urgent calls have been completely ignored by the New Zealand government!
The result is that now there are now only 55 Maui's dolphins left on this planet!
