Vote in favor of Bill A775A-2013, same as S1776-2013. Put companion animals under The New York State Penal Code.

The Issue

An animal is abused every 10 seconds in America, according to the ASPCA.

In a recent article in The Observer Dispatch, Oneida County has one of the highest animal abuse rates in the state of NY.

With statistics as alarming as this no wonder animal cruelty laws have to be changed.

As a lifelong dog owner and an animal lover at heart I am outraged at the problem of animal abuse, neglect, and the lack of protection they have under the law.

In a conversation I had with someone I was shocked to hear that some people don’t think animals can feel pain. Animals are sentient beings. They do feel pain! The American Animal Hospital Association said this:

“(We support) the concept of animals being sentient beings.  Sentiency is the ability to feel, perceive or be conscious, or to have subjective experiences. Biological science, as well as common sense, supports the fact that the animals that share our lives are feeling, sensing beings that deserve thoughtful, high-quality care. The care that is offered should provide for the animal’s physical and behavioral welfare and strive to minimize pain, distress, and suffering for the animal.”

In January 2014, a bill will be reintroduced to the state legislature specifically for companion animals. This would make the arrest and prosecution of offenders easier and penalties tougher. Sentences would be longer and harsher.  Failure to support this bill is negligence.
