New York Needs Marriage Equality!

The Issue

New York is so gay that it is hard to imagine that there'd be any question about legalizing same-sex marriage in the Empire state. Governor Andrew Cuomo has stated that marriage equality is a priority issue, and a recent poll showed that the majority of New Yorkers support same-sex marriage. In fact, 58 percent of residents support the cause, with only 36 percent opposed to gay marriage, which is a record low. And still, there is a fight to be had.

The Human Rights Campaign's New Yorkers for Marriage Equality Campaign has been a vital part of the fight for same-sex marriages in New York. Gay rights enthusiasts who have made videos for this campaign include Barbara Bush (yes, George W.'s daughter),  New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Entertainers like Joan Rivers, Whoopi Goldberg, and a slew of others, have also provided support. And who is the latest person to jump on the bandwagon? It's none other than Law and Order star Sam Waterston.

“Let’s make the system fair and end institutionalized bigotry," he says in his thirty-second clip.

But the popular actor is not the only person to have filmed a video this week. Former National Organization for Marriage (NOM) strategist Louis Marinelli also recorded a message. Marinelli quit the anti-gay marriage group two weeks ago. While his ad is not affiliated with the HRC campaign, it is similar in tone.

“For years I worked against the constitutional principles of equality that I as a conservative Republican value very deeply. And I was wrong," he says. “During the summer tour I organized with the National Organization for Marriage last year to oppose marriage equality, I came to see that everyone was deserving of the freedom of marriage, because this is not a political issue. Being conservative and supporting marriage equality are not mutually exclusive. They are compatible.”

Personally, I think it takes a really strong person to admit their wrongs in such a public forum. Hopefully, Marinelli's message will reach a few new people.
