The New South Wales police force is planning on banning visible tattoos. This means that anyone who is trying to join the police force and has a tattoo on their neck or face will immediately be denied the opportunity to serve their community and those with visible tattoos elsewhere may not be given the opportunity to join.
This policy is blatantly discriminatory, by making this a policy they will be depriving New South Wales communities of wonderful, capable, honest, intelligent and hardworking people.
Tattoos are no longer the sign of a criminal, people from all social and cultural backgrounds, and people of all ages are being tattooed. It is no longer a taboo, and the police force trying to make it so. It speaks volumes of the attitude of the assistant police commissioners, not those with tattoos.
Assistant police commissioner Michael Corboy, who is one of the authors of this policy, the other is Assistant police commissioner Paul Carey, was quoted as saying "Does the community want someone knocking on their door with a Mike Tyson tattoo on their face or neck? I don't think so,"
Mr Corboy and Mr Paul Carey, I wouldn't care if a police officer with facial tattoos knocked on my door. As long as he or she had the appropriate identification, I would gladly open my door and I would be happy to have him/her serving the community.
Do not paint the picture that people with tattoos are untrustworthy thugs. This is not true. Please do not implement this policy.
