Never another Posey: Petition to MLB & Bud Selig to ban violent, non-sliding home-plate collisions

Never another Posey: Petition to MLB & Bud Selig to ban violent, non-sliding home-plate collisions

The Issue

I do not think I am alone when I say that I was horrified and sickened when I watched the Buster Posey injury occur live during the course of the Giants v Marlins game live on May 25, 2010. Every Giant fan I've spoken with, or any fan for that matter who has witnessed the injury, felt awful at the very least. It was not something anybody wanted to see.

At its very core, this Petition argues and takes a stand that making fans feel awful is bad for Major League Baseball. Therefore, Major League Baseball would be wise to ban "blow up the catcher" home-plate collisions, hitherto defended as "part of the game," because it is a known, common, and completely unnecessary cause of injury to MLB players.

No fan ever wants to see a player get injured in a violent play, whether called "clean and hard" or straight dirty, and that feeling is stronger than the desire to see violent plays that do not result in injury.

The game can be played hard with less injury. Major League Baseball has the ability, and the MLBPA has the obligation, to protect their players.

Together they can, and should, strongly punish any collision with a catcher who is not blocking the plate, whether he is in front of or behind it, and that all runners trying to score must aim for

I never want to see a Carlos Santana injury again: http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=10545643

I never want to see a Yadier Molina injury again: http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=3009131

And, going retro, I never want to see a Ray Fosse injury again: http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=13099647

Violent injury should not be a part of baseball. Major League Baseball and the Players Association (MLBPA) must protect the players. And in doing so, show respect to the fans.

All fans love some players. And when fans watch a player grow from a promising pup with big paws into a bonafide superstar among the best in the league--we really love those players. And seeing them get taken from us--for any period of time--on a hard, but unnecessary play is a terrible thing.

We don't want to see home-plate injuries if we can help it.

Please sign and spread the petition if you agree.

Bruce Bochy, manager and former catcher, might also agree: http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=15201667
