Cancel Shark Hunters - Stop Supporting the Killing of Sharks

The Issue

The NBC Sports show Shark Hunters glorifies and promotes the killing of sharks, amazing animals already under pressure from overfishing, finning and environmental pollution. And all three of the species hunted on Shark Hunters are listed as "Vulnerable" by The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).

The show features three tournaments that give financial prizes for bringing in dead sharks from 3 species: mako, thresher and porbeagle. NBC should not be glamorizing the killing of vulnerable sharks under the pretense of "sport" or "sustainable fishing".

Programs like this not only glamorize shark hunting and killing but also make the whole action "OK". Sharks play an important role in our oceans and if we continue to hunt them, our ocean'ss health will continue to decline.

Change.org petitions have successfully convinced other channels, like National Geographic and the Discovery Channel, to cancel other violent hunting shows. I'm sure with enough signatures, we can get NBC to listen.

Please join me in asking NBC and it partners to cancel Shark Hunters!

My boat, Bella Donna, is a featured boat on NBC's Shark Hunter series. We respect and appreciate all of your comments and concerns of over-fishing sharks. In two season of fishing on Shark Hunters, Bella Donna released alive more than 100 sharks and kept 3. Each of the 3 sharks we kept were filleted and eating by our crew and their families. Bella Donna is strictly a recreational sport fish boat and we do not commercial fish or sell our catch. We have witnessed, firsthand, the negative effects of over-fishing a species. Federal and State regulations and limits have recently restored populations of Great White Sharks, Striped Bass and Fluke. Unfortunately, the habitat restorations and fish management programs of the United Stated are not shared by all other countries and there is limited enforcement in international waters. Commercial fishermen using drag nets and long lines with thousands of hooks, kill more sharks as "by-catch" in a single week, then all recreational fishermen combined do in an entire season. Bella Donna will continue fish with circle hooks and only keep what we can eat. As an active member of IGFA, we will work with folks like you, to manage and maintain our precious fisheries for future generation. The Producer and owner of the TV Series Shark Hunters, Fred Christenson, encourages all five featured boats to only bring to the tournament scales, fish that are larger than any previously weighed fish. This means we often release qualifying fish that would make the leaderboard but not result in a win. Additionally, the series producer provides each boat with shark tags to help biologist better understand growth rates and migration patterns of the sharks we release. Again, thank you for your comments. David - Bella Donna Fishing Team
