The new Minnesota Democratic Farmer Labor Party (DFL) chairman Ken Martin, asked LGBT people to encourage his election. He consulted with outfront Minnesota (See Outfront.org) as to how to help Minnesota work against a constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage in Minnesota being placed on the ballot in 2012.
Yet so far in his weekly DFL Dispatch (the weekly e-news mail of the Party), he has not mentioned LGBT equality as a priority. Once again, the LGBT community has been asked to support the election of a Chair with a sense of urgency. Yet, once he has been elected, the urgency of LGBT equality has been placed in the back of his priorities.
Over this past year, we have seen a large number of youth suicides in the Hennepin/Anoka School District because of bullying.
The local Catholic Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, the Minnesota Family Council and the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) are determined to get a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage on the 2012 ballot.
We are asking for fair minded Minnesotan's and American's to help us urge Ken Martin to assert the parties interest in pursuing equality for LGBT Equality. We are asking Ken to write about the importance of LGBT equality in the DFL Dispatch as often as possible.
Include LGBT Equality Issues in DFL Dispatch Messaging
Dear MN State DFL Chair Ken Martin
Congratulations on your election as MN State DFL Chair. We are so grateful that you have made a commitment to working for progressive and liberal causes to the point of becoming the chair of democrats in Minnesota.
We are writing to ask you to please include LGBT Equality issues in your DFL Dispatch e-news letter that goes out to many in Minnesota. Please be clear about where the DFL Party stands on LGBT equality. Please express your concerns about the looming dangers to LGBT equality in Minnesota. Please call all DFLer's in MN to become concerned and active for the equal rights of LGBT Minnesotan's.
We recognize that there are many challenges facing the DFL Party in Minnesota. Although DFL Gov. Mark Dayton was successfully elected, the House and Senate fell into the hands of a Republican Majority. The Republicans campaigned on creating jobs, but they have spent their energy on State funding for a woman's right to choose. Republicans have also spent time trying to repeal MN's gun permit laws. Like other Republicans they have also launched their assaults against labor unions and collective bargaining rights.
Yet, there is also a looming danger to Minnesota's LGBT communities. We expect that before the election in 2012 Republicans will plan to place a constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage on the ballot. This constitutional amendment effort will be fully funded and supported by the Minnesota Catholic Conference, the Minnesota Family Council and the National Organization for Marriage NOM. NOM will do robo calls to encourage people to vote for this measure.
Ken, the time to begin messaging Minnesota's DFL Party to rally people against writing discrimination into the State Constitution is now. The losses to MN LGBT families and individual's rights is much too great to wait.
The lives of LGBT youth who have committed suicide shows that there is an urgent immediate need for messaging from the DFL Chair.
We ask you to include the issues that surround LGBT equality in the DFL Dispatch e-news as soon as possible, and often.
Thank you for time and consideration of our request.
Respectfully Submitted,
